Anyone else notice when you put Mercury and Leo’s symbols together, you get a little devil with a pony tail? Just me? OK…Anyway, we are finally ending this long trek through Mercury in Cancer (my natal Mercury so I ain’t hatin’. Just ready to keep on evolving!) In this article, we will discuss what we learned from Mercury’s trip through Cancer (May 28th-August 5th), as well as how can balance what we learned as we head into Mercury in Leo (now until August 20th).

Mercury in Cancer Recap
What the hell happened these past few months? Specifically between May 28th and now, emotions were high! On a universal level, we were all hit with intense feelings that we just couldn’t sit back and suppress any longer. Paired with Mars in Aries, things got heated, tempers flared, and the division in our country strengthened. These energies of Mercury in Cancer and Mars in Aries contradict each other; communicating deeply and empathetically (Mercury in Cancer) is squaring headstrong action and self discovery (Mars in Aries). It’s not easy to balance these energies.
I personally was very distant from people during this time. I curled up in my crab shell and was passive aggressive towards any loved ones who made comments about it. This is the low form of Mercury in Cancer paired with the low form of Mars in Aries. This could have been prevented. In Astrology, we can always see what energy the signs and planets will provide us and we can work to flow with them…but most days I just didn’t want to flow. I was feeling way too damn much! I was taking on the entire worlds pain and was mentally too weak to overcome it. Remember, Cancer (actually all water signs) are deeply empathetic. With that being said, we all have empathy inside of us. Some have a little, some have a lot.
Connecting To The Elements
During the past few months with Mercury in Cancer many of us had a heightened sense of empathy. Some of you may have reacted like I did and retreated to your shells (Imbalanced Water); some of you may have been stuck in your old ways of doing things and were struggling to adapt to all the new ways people on social media were telling you to best live your lives (Imbalanced Earth); some of you may have been cooking up conspiracy theories or constantly wracking your brains for any and all solutions to all of the worlds problems (Imbalanced Air); and finally, some of you may have suppressed your feelings and powered on through life anyway (Imbalanced Fire). All of us felt the collective pain of the world in some form. Regardless of what imbalanced element you experienced, if any; I am proud of you for making it this far. This is not an easy time to be alive and we are all doing the best we can right now.
If you need help connecting with the elements on a deeper level, it may help to think of them as what they literally appear to be in life. Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) are flowy and emotional, just like the waves in the ocean. Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are steady and stable, just like the Earth beneath our feet. Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are friendly and connected, just like the air that connects us together continuously. Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are feisty and passionate just like a burning flame. All elements and signs are constantly moving and evolving through each other.
What Do We Need To Know And How Can We Flow From Watery Cancer Mercury Into Fiery Leo Mercury?
Mercury = Communication, Intellect, and Reason
Leo = Creative Expression, Loyalty, and Playfulness
What do all these keywords combined equal…
Super awesome fun for the next month!!
Just kidding, that would be lovely wouldn’t it? Life carries on every day and presents us with new challenges. So we can’t just assume Mercury Leo, in Leo season is going to be easy, fun, play time all the time. But who’s to say we can’t incorporate more of this fun play time in our day to day lives?! 2020 has shown us over and over again that we have to rest and take breaks. We will burn out if we push non stop. But we also have change to make. America is progressing. It’s foundation is being questioned and we can’t give up and goof off now!
BALANCE
Below I give tips for balancing the elements within all of us as we transition from Mercury in Cancer to Mercury in Leo. *Keep in mind, you may have a Fire sun sign, but also have a lot of Water Energy in your birth chart. I am a Cancer sun but I also have a lot of Earth energy inside me, so I resonate with both these balancing strategies.*
The elements balance through each other! You can even look to the missing elements for balance if that feels right. My advice: Read all of the tips and do what feels most aligned for you!
Balancing from Mercury in Cancer to Mercury in Leo for Water Signs
Were you being a hermit and retreating in your shell these past couple months? Here’s what I recommend for finding balance:
- Go out in nature. Walk barefoot in the grass and imagine you are one of the trees, rooted in the Earth beneath you. Take your time and play in the yard, just like you did as a child.
- Call a loyal companion or therapist. The news can be very overwhelming right now. All it takes is one sad article to send you into a spiral. Always remember, you are not alone; I promise you. Talk it out.
- Draw! Paint! Color! Get wild with it! No need to color in the lines! Spew some colors out on paper (or iPad like I do). Art is the ultimate emotional release.
Balancing from Mercury in Cancer to Mercury in Leo for Earth Signs
Were you stuck in your old ways of living life and struggling to adapt to all the new ways people on social media have been telling you to live? Here’s what I recommend for finding balance:
- Put your phone down and take a bath. Add some yummy smelling bubbles to play with. Light a candle. Get zen. Whatever you do, social media detox! You will never find out what you truly need until we take a break from the judgement of the outside world.
- Call an old friend. 2020 is purging a lot of our old systems, but friendship doesn’t have to be one of them! Who in your life has always been there for you? Give them a call, let them know how you feel.
- Have a bonfire! I live in an apartment so I am jealous of anyone who has a yard with a fire pit. If you are like me and don’t have a fire pit, get creative! Pack a cooler, go outside wherever you can, and light a Citronella Candle (it keeps the bugs away and gives you that much needed fire balance!)
Balancing from Mercury in Cancer to Mercury in Leo for Air Signs
Were you cooking up conspiracy theories or getting lost in your head while trying to find solutions for the overwhelming amount of world problems? Here’s what I recommend for finding balance:
- Go for a swim. Exercise is a great way to get out of your head, and swimming is great for loosening up and letting it all out! Don’t have a pool? (Me neither and I hate it!) Find another way to exercise in water by renting a kayak or a boat somewhere. **With COVID in the air**, I’m not even sure those options are available so if you must, tie up some water balloons and toss them around outside with your family (just pick up the pieces please). Get out of your head, get wet, and goof around for a bit!
- Come back down to Earth. Earth can be scary, but it is your home. The Earth Mother is here for you, but she needs you to be loyal to her now more than ever. When you stay in your head, you disconnect from her. She will help you clear your mind and guide you towards true solutions and peace. Connect with the Earth and your root Chakra by grounding in nature, eating foods like root vegetables, and wearing the color red.
- Like the flame in a hot air balloon, Fire can lift Air to new heights! Trust your gut, ignite your passionate side and express your creative solutions for change. Be careful and use the tips above as well as expressing solutions, or else you may come on too strong. Air signs embody intelligence and we need that now more than ever! Also, please do your best to drop the conspiracy theory sharing online right now. Conspiracy theories are fun and all, but the internet is loaded with false information; we need reputable sources and concrete solutions. You know the truth is in there; let it out!
Balancing from Mercury in Cancer to Mercury in Leo for Fire Signs
Were you suppressing your feelings and powering on through life anyway, feeling like burn out or a tantrum was right around the corner? Here’s what I recommend for finding balance:
- Cool off. Take a cold shower, eat some cooling foods like cucumbers and melons. Just take a chill pill! Anger is not the solution right now and taking a cooling break will also reset your body so the fatigue and burn out won’t take over. Play with the cooling elements; go outside and dump a bucket of ice water on yourself! Or have more fun with it and dump it on your family, be prepared for payback though…
- Build something. Work with your hands for a bit. Even if you build something small. Seeing progress in front your eyes helps to ease the frustrating feeling that nothing is being done. Maybe all you build is a little necklace for your partner, or maybe you are going to build them that IKEA shelf they bought 3 months ago but were too overwhelmed to put together! Romance is another element that connects us to Leo. Building (whether physical or metaphorical) in your relationships induces loyalty. Loyalty induces love. Love suppresses anger.
- Dance! Move around! Wiggle like you’ve never wiggled before! Yes dancing is grounding, but dancing is also whimsical and moving, just like the air we breath. Whether you dance like J-Lo (Leo alert) or like Richard Simmons (Cancer alert), dancing is cathartic. Leave the dance videos behind and dance like no one is watching. Be free!
Mercury in Leo Summary
Mercury entering Leo is nothing to fear. Leo is a Fire Sign and Fire is inside all of us. It is what powers our digestive systems and keep us flowing. Our inner Fire is what lights us up and gives us the motivation to continue on our paths. The communication has been emotionally rough these past few months, but it needed to happen that way. The dirt under America’s foundation needed to surface. Now that it is exposed, it is up to us to band together and creatively express solutions. Let’s all help each other out here!
