Mercury retrograde is known as a time for technology errors and communication struggles. Although, in this technical age we live in, I feel these struggles regardless of Mercury retrograde. Really 2020, was tough on me, and everyone. But it felt like 2021’s Capricorn season was a time for all my deepest depressions and anxieties to slap me right in the face.

Emmy’s Communication Struggles
In my quest to discover who I am and why I’m here, I’ve realized there is no destination on the quest. I will never truly know my “purpose” because I will never have just one purpose. My purpose will ebb and flow like a river streaming down a mountain, over a waterfall, and into a beautiful lake. My purpose will be rough and scary at times and comfortably still at others. A persons purpose never stays the same for too long.
On my blogging journey, I’ve come a long way. Again, I’m not sure where I’m headed exactly; but, local mac n cheeses, horror stories, and zodiac character associations is where I started, not where I stayed! The thing I love most about blogging is that I have yet to get bored with it. I can always change up my topics, add a new theme, and spice things up! When my purpose changes, my blog changes.
I’m not sure what my purpose was these past few years. In my mind it was to be purposeless and to take up unnecessary space in my loved ones lives. Sounds harsh, I know; yet, it’s how I felt. Since this was how I felt on the inside, this was how I wrote and projected myself to the world. I wrote like I had no purpose. I wrote like I had nothing good to say. Mostly, I wrote with a sense of impending doom and extreme caution – expecting to be cancelled at any minute (which is funny because it’s hard to be cancelled when you have like 7 readers!).
With all that said, I’m proud of myself for the few times I pushed the envelope and posted some risky things in 2020. However, I’m not proud of the many times I wrote something, then clarified, then clarified again, then clarified AGAIN! There were times when I wrote and panicked so much about my words, that I posted long Instagram posts explaining and defending my words, when I wasn’t even being attacked! Truly only a handful of people were reading my posts, and many of them were friends who knew my intentions, so there was no reason to get defensive and insecure after every blog post.
With all that said, maybe my purpose was to be outright insecure and defensive at that time. I know, I know. Sounds like a stretch but hear me out… The internet is a breeding ground for fakers and scammers. Showing my awkward humanness online may have bothered some, but entertained and motivated others. We need more people who mess up and say the wrong things. We need more people who look “bad” and don’t Photoshop themselves in every picture. Humans need to see more reality on the internet.
Sometimes reality is dark, depressing, and anxiety ridden. While I understand the value of positivity, and I am striving to be better every day, I have depression and anxiety. I’m not perfect, but I will share my life with you anyway.

But consider this, how freeing would it feel to just switch it up and post an all natural picture with no filter?! Try changing the way you communicate virtually. This could be on social media, or this could be at work through email. Maybe you’ve been pretty blunt with your text in the past. Try loosening up the “B****, you did not just say that to me!” attitude. Genuine human expressions are impossible to gather via text. You can add a smiley face or an explanation point, but that doesn’t always do the trick. It does help though! The reader may see your smiley face as a sarcastic slap in the face, or they may see it as a sign of peace and friendliness, either way try mixing a few in and see what kind of reactions you get from people.
