Emmy’s Favorite Gemini Drummers
Since the Gemini Drummers playlist is packed full of all of my favorite songs from a fabulous bunch of drummers, it was tough to pick a couple favorites. However, there were two very obvious people that jumped out at me in this list. John Bonham and Charlie Watts obviously stood out because they are legends! So let’s take a deeper look at their drumming styles and see how it relates to the sign of the twins.
Gemini Keywords to Remember:
Adaptable, Clever, Collaborative, Inventive, Intelligent, Synergy
But first, lets take a second to explore the word synergy. The dictionary defines synergy as “the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.” Please keep this definition in mind as you read more about and listen to these famous Gemini drummers.
John Bonham 5-31-1948 (Led Zepplin)
I’m just guessing here, but after spending many hours researching famous drummers, I’d bet that John Bonham is the pinnacle of inspiration for at least 80% of drummers out there today. “Friends and fans remember the loud but loveable bloke from Birmingham with gratitude and respect. To them, he defined and dignified rock drumming. And all these years later he remains The One. Yes, there have been faster, louder, and more technical players, but in the end, they all bow to Bonham.” A quote from this Drum Magazine article by Wayne Blanchard.
As for John’s style, let’s touch on what they said about Stomp Groove in this video (above). They said, “Without a steady drummer, this beat could have easily fallen into chaos.” And it’s very clear from the videos that John Bonham is the the epitome of stylized balance. We can see this brought to life through his Sun sign, as his Gemini flair is what provides the flexibility required to change up the beat in the way that he does. But not only that, John’s Gemini drummer qualities are present in his ability to respond to the rest of the band. If the guitarist wants to change up the time signature and veer off course, that’s OK because this changeable Gemini drummer will be right there to support them.
Charles Robert Watts 6-2-1941 (The Rolling Stones)
Speaking of Charlie Watts (mentioned in the John Bonham video above)… Drumming doesn’t always have to be flashy in order to influence the masses.
I find this video fascinating because we look at many different things with many different drummers, but what stands out with Charlies style, is his left hand going down on the back beat, while his right hand raises off the hi-hat.
While I’m finding astrological connections with Gemini being ruled by the hands, the more interesting piece I feel, is the fact that many drummers copied this style from Charlie; or as Jim Keltner says in the video, it occurred through osmosis. Osmosis being “the process of gradual or unconscious assimilation of ideas, knowledge, etc.” Charlie, a mutable Gemini drummer, was not conscious of this trend that he started with his hand movements. It was the Astro Twins that taught me, mutable signs, or as they call them – mavens, are the trend setters of the zodiac. We can’t help but copy our Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces friends.
