The Libra Drummer Style

One thing that’s apparent in this Libra Drummers Playlist is the amount of Jazz drummers scattered throughout it. For this reason, let’s take a look at the definition of Jazz for a second.

“Jazz- a type of music of black American origin characterized by improvisation, syncopation, and usually a regular or forceful rhythm, emerging at the beginning of the 20th century.”

Syncopation is ”a disturbance or interruption of the regular flow of rhythm.”

Surprisingly, in the definition of Jazz, it says there is “syncopation, and usually a regular or forceful rhythm”. So in one definition, we have a disturbance of the regular rhythm, and regular rhythm. Can there be both in one song? If anyone can understand and project the dual nature of rhythm, it’d be these Libra drummers.

Joe Jones

In this video (link in header above), we can see that improvisation is where Jo Jones shines. Improv by nature, is irregular. Its random and free flowing, but a great drummer can improv a solo, bring it right on back to the rhythm of the song and finish it out with the rest of the band.

Buddy Rich

Anyone else notice a trend so far from Jo to Buddy? Well I noticed (video linked in header above) that they have these big old smiles on their faces when they play! Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of love and beauty, after all. But beyond the smile, Buddy’s technique is incredible. He has this free flowing Libra drummer ease about him, while also maintaining insane speed and balanced rhythm.

Art Blakey

While writing this post over Virgo season, my partner sent me this tweet with a quote from Art Blakey. Little did he know, I was having a terrible day and was listening to this Libra Drummers Playlist to help calm my nerves.

There’s something scary, yet refreshing about this quote. On one hand, knowing we’re not special doesn’t make us feel good. On the other hand, knowing that the world doesn’t revolve around us, can make our problems seem less big and scary. Like jazz music, life is complex. It’s delicately balanced among the elements, and it’s syncopated and irregular like a Libra drummers beat.
