Many of you know me as Emmy of the Lou, but do you know why I chose the name? “The Lou” is just another name for the great city of St. Louis, where I just so happen to live. I was born in Saginaw Michigan, raised in Troy Illinois, but overall – I’m from the Lou and I’m proud. Despite the ups and downs you hear about in the news, St. Louis is a great place to live. To celebrate this great city, I’m diving into the Astrology of a local holiday we like to call, 314 day.
Why 314 Day?
While some celebrate Pi day on 3/14, St. Louisans celebrate their city (because our most popular area code is 314). Back in 2006, Terrell “Young Dip” Evans and Tatum Polk created the holiday to celebrate the traditions and local businesses that make St. Louis special.
In 2022, Mayor Jones declared 314 day an official holiday. Which is exciting because we love an excuse to party here in the Lou; an official excuse is just a bonus!
So where does Astrology come into this? Astrology is not just for horoscopes and birth charts. We can learn a lot about St. Louis just by looking at the Astrology of 314 Day. With this intention in mind, let’s dive into the chart.
The Original 314 Day Astrological Chart

What stands out first and foremost in this 314 Day astrological chart is that Full Moon in Virgo (which you can see in the third house section near the bottom of the chart). Full Moons are full of energy and illumination, making this a great time to shine a light on the positive aspects of our city. It’s also important to note that Virgo is a very organized and detail oriented Earth sign, which energetically helped make this holiday last for years to come.
Another eye catcher in this chart is that good old Mercury retrograde in Pisces (seen near the top of the chart in the ninth house section). I was a 618 resident sixth grader at the time, so I’m not an expert on how this day played out… but I would guess there were some communication and technology blunders throughout the day. Especially with Uranus, the planet of rebellion and chaos, in the mix.
Astrology and the History of 314 Day
While researching the history of 314 Day, I didn’t find much – but I found this interesting Living St. Louis video. One thing I loved about this video was when Andrew Wanko said “St. Louis has always been a place that feels like it’s sort of struggling to prove itself to itself.” Then he goes on to say “You can both love St. Louis, while still admitting it’s a place that has faults and things that need to be made better.”
The Astrology of 314 Day may seem rough at first glance, but Mercury retrograde is not inherently bad. Mercury retrograde is a time for reevaluating things that could be made better. It’s when things go wrong, so that we understand how to make things right in the future. The fact that 314 Day was invented during a Mercury retrograde period shows us that this holiday was genuinely designed to make our city better.
How to Celebrate 314 Day
The best way to celebrate 314 Day is to support your favorite local businesses. Personally I will be working at Taco Buddha, a local St. Louis restaurant that makes deliciously large tacos and yummy margaritas. Before that I might go to the City Museum and put underwear on my head. Probably not though…we’ll see. If you’re not into tacos or underpants, then check out this list of events from STL Made.
With a Taurus/Gemini Moon, the Astrology of 314 Day in 2024 is looking like a solid day for collaboration and straight up treating yourself. So grab your pals and hit the town. Show St. Louis some love by sharing your adventures on social media and using the hashtags #STLMade, #314Day, and #LoveLocalSTL.
Summary
All in all, the Astrology of 314 Day has shown me that even though our city isn’t perfect – we have the ability to come together and make it better by celebrating the good.
If you’re reading this and you’re not from St. Louis, look up the history of a local holiday in your area and see what was going on with the planets at that time. Remember that you can use the stars for more than just horoscopes and personal input.
